The Daedalus Project - Fringe World Perth 2017

26-01-2017 13:35

THE DAEDALUS PROJECT is a modular multimedia art event held across three art spaces in the Maylands cultural district. The exhibition will be comprised of new work by 8 internationally and nationally recognised Hellenic-Australian artists such as Stelarc, Ioannis Michaloudis (Darwin) Victoria Holessis (Melbourne), as well as local artists Chris Cobilis, Masonik, Steve Paraskos, Renee Doropoulos and Petros Vouris.

The theme of THE DAEDALUS PROJECT interweaves through concepts of myth, body, culture and technology, with the name of the project itself coming from the myth of the first Greek sculpture and inventor Daedalus. Daedalus, who is better known through the loss of his son Icarus, is symbolic of the symbiotic nature of art and technology in the ethos of ancient Hellenic culture.

The Hellenic Ēkhōs initiative seeks to inform and challenge predisposed ideas of Hellenic culture and art, beyond cultural clichés and racial caricatures. Their DAEDALUS PROJECT presents works of wonder, leaving the viewer in awe as it weaves through themes of culture and identity, myth and reason, and the relationship between techne (craft/technology) and art. The significance of these ideas to us ‘moderns’ is in the reignited relationship between art and science, which is now once again, urgently contemporary.
