Call for Papers: Studia Phaenomenologica Vol. XVI (2016): Film and Phenomenology

Call for Papers: Studia Phaenomenologica Vol. XVI (2016): Film and Phenomenology

Call for Papers: Studia Phaenomenologica Vol. XVI (2016): Film and Phenomenology

Guest Editors: Christian Ferencz-Flatz and Julian Hanich

EXTENDED DEADLINE: 1 September, 2015.

The 2016 issue of Studia Phaenomenologica will interrogate the relationship of phenomenology and film.

When it comes to associating film and philosophy, no other analogy is as persistent as the equation of film and phenomenology (except perhaps the cliché of comparing film audiences to the people in Plato’s cave). The film-phenomenology analogy is already foreshadowed by Husserl’s letter to Hugo von Hofmannsthal from 1907, in which he compares the phenomenological method to aesthetic experience. It is explicitly sketched out in Merleau-Ponty’s lecture “The Film and the New Psychology” from 1945 and it is then picked up by numerous authors like Bazin, Ayfre and others. According to this analogy, Acoafilm and phenomenology both share a similar view of perception as a temporal process, they both regard man as a being situated in the world, they both operate the same reduction of positional belief and they both hold the same affinity towards intuitive description.

Open Call for work

Masters & Servers is a programme of activities devoted to the investigation of networked cultures in the post-digital age. Five key organisations in the European contemporary and media arts – Aksioma (Slovenia), Drugo More (Croatia), Link Art Center (Italy), Abandon Normal Devices (UK) and The Influencers (Spain) – have joined forces to map – and possibly contribute to – a constantly shifting territory where media-savvy artists, hacktivists and creators traverse the frontiers of contemporary art, social intervention and amateur invention.

http://www.mastersandservers.org

Masters & Servers now launches an open call for a new commissioned project across the forms of interventions, data manipulation, representation, research or storytelling. Inspired by D. Rushkoff’s thesis that in the aftermath of the digital revolution, an uncertain condition has emerged: “instead of optimizing our machines for humanity, we are optimizing humans for machinery”. Can art be a key force in reversing this process? How will it deal with the current social media euphoria (or paranoia)? How should the world be represented and lived after Edward Snowden’s revelations?

Residency Theme: Remote Site-specific acoustic improvisations: A Recording Project

Since 2009 the artist collective Medea Electronique has organized an annual 10-day experimental artist residency, Koumaria, near Sparta in Greece (the village of Sellasia), focusing on improvisation and new media practices. New-media artists from all over the world, inspired by the Greek natural landscape, come together to create a multicultural and cross-media ‘dialogue’ culminating in a collective presentation both locally and in Athens at the end of the residency. Past residents have formed lasting friendships and new artistic partnerships. For us the residency serves as a model for future creative collaborations.

Residency organized by artist collective Medea Electronique

Deadline to apply July 1st 2015

Residency Runs from: SEPTEMBER 11th 2015 to SEMPTEMBER 21st 2015

COLLIDE@CERN ARS ELECTRONICA AWARD 2015

COLLIDE@CERN ARS ELECTRONICA AWARD 2015

22-06-2015 20:02

After three successful years within the Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN Award, CERN and Ars Electronica decided to continue this fruitful cooperation and again launch an open call to win a fully funded residency for up to 2 months at CERN followed by a residency at the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The continuation of Collide@CERN Ars Electronica Award will be realized within the „European Digital Art and Science Network“.

Within the Collide@CERN Ars Electronica Award artists from any country are invited to apply for a fully funded residency for up to 2 months at CERN, an international center of excellence, an inspirational place for artists and designers to explore and extend their research in order to find new artistic approaches. The Ars Electronica Futurelab as second residency destination, where the awarded artist will spend another month, focuses on the future of the nexus of art, technology and society. The lab’s team bases its work commitment upon transdisciplinary research and work which results in a variety of different disciplines. Having Artists and Researchers from all over the globe collaborating with – and taking residencies at – the Ars Electronica Futurelab, is fundamental to this Atelier/Laboratory.

We are looking for digital artists who will be truly inspired by CERN, showing their wish to engage with the ideas and/or technology of particle physics and with CERN as a place of scientific collaboration, using them as springboards of the imagination which dare to go beyond the paradigm. You might be a choreographer, performer, visual artist, film maker or a composer – what you all have in common is that you use the digital as the means of making your work and/or the way of presenting it.
