PhD Research Topic: “Contemporary Hieroglyphics: The Evolution of the Visual Form of Hip Hop Graffiti”

The research focuses on graffiti, a form of expression that develops in public space and has a deep-rooted history. Although it is often accepted as a cultural phenomenon—particularly in the West—there is limited attention to its origins or artistic value. This lack of awareness, together with the illegality still associated with certain types of graffiti, shrouds it in a sense of mystery, as if graffiti were a secret language addressed only to the initiated. The research will examine contemporary graffiti, which encompasses various forms such as hip hop graffiti (New York style graffiti), post-graffiti, and street art. The present study will focus on contemporary hip hop graffiti, exploring the evolution of its visual form—its artistic practices, expressive capacities, and the use of new technologies in its current development.
