Care-Based Mobility

The Interactive Arts Laboratory welcomes applications for art-practice-based research from visiting artists and researchers supported by independent funding who wish to develop their activities in Corfu. Given the insular context of Corfu and the Ionian Islands, the Laboratory prioritises hosting activities during the low-tourism season (November–March) in order to reduce environmental pressure on fragile island ecosystems, avoid intensifying peak-season challenges such as travel congestion, housing scarcity, and increased energy consumption, and support more balanced territorial development. Through this strategic timing, the Laboratory also contributes to key European Union objectives, including the promotion of sustainable tourism models, climate adaptation practices, and social inclusion, aligning cultural and research activities with broader sustainability and cohesion goals.

1. Welcoming Visiting Researchers

The Laboratory actively welcomes visiting researchers who:

Are funded through external grant schemes
• Propose art-practice-based research aligned with the Laboratory’s thematic areas
• Contribute to teaching and mentoring activities
• Engage in public outreach and knowledge exchange
• Develop their activities during the low-tourism season (November–March)

2. Encouraging Responsible Mobility

Visiting researchers are encouraged to:

Choose low-carbon travel options where feasible
• Prioritise:
◦ ferry and rail travel
◦ direct flights
◦ economy class
• Pack minimally
• Use locally sourced materials
• Avoid unnecessary shipping of equipment or artworks

Sustainability is framed as a shared institutional responsibility, not an individual burden.

3. Equality, Accessibility & Inclusion

The Interactive Arts Laboratory is committed to ensuring equal access and non-discrimination across all its programmes. Applications are welcomed regardless of gender, gender identity, ethnicity, nationality, disability, age, socio-economic background, religion, or family status. We actively seek to create accessible and caring research environments, recognising that structural inequalities shape who is able to travel, participate, and sustain research practice.

Our low-season hosting policy is designed not only for environmental sustainability, but also to increase affordability and accessibility, particularly for early-career researchers, caregivers, and individuals from underrepresented regions. The Laboratory remains attentive to specific access needs and encourages applicants to communicate any requirements related to mobility, care responsibilities, or accessibility, so that reasonable accommodations can be explored.

For us, sustainability is inseparable from social justice and inclusion.

4. Institutional & European Alignment

This framework aligns with:

Creative Europe priorities on sustainable cultural mobility
• Horizon Europe principles of Responsible Research & Innovation
• Erasmus+ strategies on green, blended, and inclusive mobility
• European Green Deal objectives
• New European Bauhaus values

By prioritising longer stays, low-season mobility, and externally funded residencies, the Laboratory promotes responsible internationalisation without intensifying carbon impact or extractive academic tourism.
