Ph.D Candidate at the Department of Audio and Visual Arts

Vasiliki Manouilidou is a graduate of the Department of Audiovisual Arts of the Ionian University’s Faculty of Music and Audiovisual Arts. She is currently pursuing postgraduate studies in the same department through the MA program "Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age". In parallel, she is enrolled in the Distance Learning Program of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Center for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning) titled "Special Education and Training: Diagnostic, Therapeutic, and Counseling Approaches. Since 2018, she has been working as a professional photographer in a photo shop based in Corfu. Her interests include emerging technologies, digital media, and music.

PhD Research Topic: Accessibility for people with visual impairments in art spaces: the role of narrative technologies in experiencing visual arts

Vasiliki Manouilidou’s doctoral research explores the accessibility of blind and visually impaired individuals to art spaces and visual exhibitions, with a particular emphasis on the role of narrative technologies in shaping inclusive aesthetic experiences. The dissertation approaches accessibility not merely as a matter of technical adaptation, but as a complex sociocultural condition that determines the equal participation of people with disabilities in both the creation and reception of art. Combining theoretical analysis with applied practice, the research investigates how tools such as audio description, multisensory interfaces, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence can function as mechanisms of embodied narration, transforming traditional modes of engaging with visual artworks. The study includes the curatorship and evaluation of accessible exhibitions developed in collaboration with disability organizations, aiming to establish a new curatorial framework based on universal design and inclusion.
