Dr. Iakovos Panagopoulos is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Audio & Visual Arts, Ionian University. His field is: “Film Production Specializing in Creating Audiovisual Narratives”.
Iakovos’s pioneering work is a combination of practical filmmaking and academic research. His goal is to narrow the gap between the two. He is directing-writing films and academic research on Media Practice, Film Practice and Film Studies. His book “The Third Path in Cinema: The Academic Filmmaker Model”, is the first Greek book that deals with film practice research field in academia.
Iakovos’s first degree in Audio Visual Arts at the Ionian University, was followed by an M.A. in Cinematography at Bournemouth University. At 2019 he completed his Ph.D. on the work of Theo Angelopoulos at the University of Central Lancashire. The title of his thesis is: “Reshaping Contemporary Greek Cinema Through a Re-evaluation of the Historical and Political Perspective of Theo Angelopoulos's Work”. He also completed his post-doctoral research in Panteion University of Social and Political Science with Prof. Seferiadis. The title of his research was: “Suspended spaces of memory: Heterotopic historical narratives and contentious politics in contemporary cinematic practice”.
He is an active researcher, counting numerous international publications. He is an official researcher in StoryLab (Skills Training for Democratised Film Industries) and scientific collaborator in InArts (Interactive Arts Lab) of Ionian University. He is also a researcher at the Laboratory on Contentious Politics of Panteion University and a researcher at the Culture-Borders-Gender/LAB at the University of Macedonia.
In addition to being an academic researcher, Iakovos also deals with cinema in practice. He is an award-winning director with short fiction films such as Flickering Souls Set Alight (2019) and Allimonò (2020) and documentaries such as A Quest for Eternity (2020) and Iannis Xenakis: Music of the Universe (2023). He was a grader for three years in the feature film competition of the Screenwriters Guild of Greece as well as a member of the jury of the Kalamata Documentary Short Film Festival. He is also a member of the Scriptwriters Guild of Greece and the Greek Directors Guild.
